How
to help your caregiver with this topic
- Conduct daily safety scans of the child care environment. Don’t feel
shy about bringing up safety problems. Your child’s wellbeing and your caregiver’s
job and livelihood are at stake. If it’s hard to find a good time to talk about
problems, jot down any concerns you see and hand the list to your caregiver. This
takes away the need for confrontation and allows your caregiver to assess the
situation, and think of solutions after hours.
- When you see a good article on child safety, pass it on to your caregiver.
- Let your caregiver know of product recalls that you hear/ see about on
TV or in the paper.
- Offer to replace or help supply safety devices that are needed – new cords, electrical outlet protective covers, a new appropriate safety gate that must be attached securely.
- Organize a parent education night with your caregiver. Work with the program’s
child care health consultant or community safety expert (for example American
Red Cross, fire department or police) to design a program about injury
prevention in child care and home settings.
